In una recente intervista rilasciata al mensile Autosport, il team principal della scuderia Toro Rosso, Franz Tost, si augura l'arrivo delle competizioni eSports anche in Formula 1. Dopo il successo mediatico della eRace di Las Vegas in Formula E, Tost sogna la domenica mattina dei Gran Premi interamente dedicata ad un evento virtuale, con tanto di diretta ed aperto a tutti gli appassionati.
We must improve the show itself. We must bring in the young peoples' interest, for example with E-games. Why not have Sunday morning an eGame with a big broadcast where people worldwide are involved to increase the interest? The eGame would work simply in that there's a game and companies would be involved in eGames and say look. For example, we race in Abu Dhabi with exhibitions from different countries and let's see where they end up. Young people are not so much interested in cars and we must see a way to bring them into Formula 1.
Promotion must start earlier, maybe three or four months before a race, with some drivers coming for autograph sessions and show runs. It cannot be that you come to the airport and do not see anything about there being a Formula 1 race this weekend. Formula 1 is special, there is only one once a year in a country. It must be promoted as something exceptional, something special and then people will go there. You must provide a fantastic programme, I must say the organiser in Austin did fantastic because 70,000 or 80,000 came only because of the concert and then they said 'there's a Formula 1 race as well, let's take a look'.
Da notare che, come abbiamo evidenziato nello speciale di Las Vegas, anche Tost è interessato unicamente al fattore show, spettacolo per i fans, cosi da portare maggiore attenzione (e spettatori) alla F1 stessa. Dobbiamo essere bravi noi appassionati di simracing a valorizzare anche il nostro spettacolo, evitando gli errori di Las Vegas...
Come del resto spiega Autosprint, Liberty Media, nuovo proprietario della Formula 1 che ha messo alla porta persino Bernie Ecclestone, ha una visione diversa del "suo" sport: badare prima a creare valore e interesse per lo show, poi pensare a come monetizzarlo. Gli americani hanno compreso che, come prima cosa, devono far tornare i giovani ed i tifosi storici a riappassionarsi alla F1, aprendola a internet, creando più interattività con piloti, squadre, gare e tifosi mediante i social network, accorciando i GP per renderli più vivaci, mandando su YouTube le clip più salienti in diretta oppure permettendo ai tifosi di seguirla in streaming dal telefono ovunque siano. Comunque la chiave sarà quella di rendere più spettacolari e soprattutto gratuiti i GP così che chiunque possa fruirne. L'eSport e le eRaces sono quindi solo una questione di tempo.
