Slightly Mad Studios is delighted to announce the newest contributor to Project CARS as real-life racing driver Nicolas Hamilton has joined the studio as Handling Consultant for the new title.

Nicolas is an excellent fit for Project CARS as his experience combines vast knowledge from racing in the real world and roots in simulation racing, allowing him to understand both sides and effectively help Project CARS fulfil its potential.

Born in Herfordshire, England, in 1992, Nicolas was brought up in the motorsports world alongside older brother Lewis. Born with Cerebral Palsy, Nicolas has always made sure this wouldn’t stop him from pursing his passion for racing.

After a first try of karting at the age of 7, Nicolas’ racing career kicked into higher gear in 2010 when he impressed everyone testing a BMW M3 at Palmer Sport. His smooth driving style earned him his MSA Novice Racing License and secured him a seat in the Air Asia Renault Clio Cup where he has been competing ever since.

Nicolas has started his second Clio Cup season this year, driving for T.C.R. You can check out a video of Nicolas in action below.

Aside from making it in the real racing world, Nicolas has also made a name for himself in simulation racing, finishing first in the 2009 SBTCC Championship and racing successful in plenty of other community-organized sim racing events.

Nicolas will be assisting the development team with making the handling in Project CARS as authentic as possible, as well as providing other general feedback.

Furthermore, he’ll join tens of thousands of members in the WMD forums, sharing his view of all the latest developments in a weekly blog for all members to enjoy.

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of welcoming race driver and long-time sim racer Nicolas Hamilton to the Slightly Mad studio!

Nicolas grew up with his brother Lewis playing on our previous highly-acclaimed GTR and GTR2 titles and has been an active member of the WMD community since November last year giving us valuable feedback and suggestions since joining (WMD members can check out Nic’s thread right here).

Eager to get more hands-on with our Project CARS title and having always wanted to make a video game, Nicolas joined us for an informative and entertaining afternoon at our studio near Tower Bridge, London.

During his time with us we discussed his time in the Renault Clio UK Cup, his current participation in the European Touring Car Cup, and how his experience on the track translates directly into the game.

We covered a wide variety of topics; everything from driver hand animations and kart physics, to the color of particular rumble strips and the position of the toilets in the pit garages icon_wink.gif

  • Driver hand animations when at full lock
  • Kart visual and physics inaccuracies
  • Handling when on astroturf
  • Tire temperatures during a Time Trial session
  • Freedom vs Realism in tuning setups
  • Atmosphere during different sessions (eg.. marshals, crowd, pit box life)
  • Tires – degradation, debris pickup, effect on handling
  • Driving School
  • Aquaplaning in the wet
  • Wind
  • Accuracy of some tracks

WMD members can get a full breakdown of the discussion here. Check back for behind-the-scenes video too!

With the continual and valuable feedback we’ve been getting from the WMD community (that have been playing the game for the last year and a half already) and real-life insight from actual race drivers, the stage is set for Project CARS to be the most authentic, realistic, beautiful, and accessible racing game of the next generation!

Nicolas Hamilton

“I was first placed on the Slightly Mad Studios team at the end of 2012 to assist with Project CARS by implementing both my sim-racing experience, which ranges from National level to World Championships for over 5 years and my real life racing experience. Having driven most of the cars and circuits in real life, I have been working on all levels of detail, from car handling to tyre behaviour, circuit surfaces to circuit detail, even down to the stitching on the interior of the car or animations of how the driver turns the steering wheel or shifts gear.

What you will notice is that every car you drive feels completely different to the last, where you have to adopt a different driving style or technique to get the maximum performance out of it. You will go through the same rituals as a real racing driver, warming the car up before the race or flying lap, working the brakes and tyres in preparation for maximum attack!

Project CARS is for gamers of all levels, from casual gamers, to professional drivers, you are all in for an incredible experience! It has been an honour and pleasure to work on this title. I hope you all enjoy playing it as much as I did developing it.”

In an upcoming short film, Nicolas talks about how sim racing allowed him to pursue his dream of becoming a racing driver, and how Project CARS’ Game Of The Year Edition is pushing into new realms such as Virtual Reality and Esports to further prove itself as the most authentic, beautiful, intense, and technically-advanced racing game on the planet.
