Guest Olli
We tested multiplayer by hosting a race for 5 players on my owm computer (same computer runs the server and is used or playing simultaneously). I have a dsl connection (10/2 Mbits) and every playe was located in Finland, which in effect means that the maximum real word distance between the server and the client is about 350 kilometers (which is not much). The gameplay was not really good, because sometimes cars just vanished and sometimes players collided with invisible cars... it seemed like a bandwidth/config problem. The reason I ask the requiremenets is that I also have driven a few races on public servers hosted in Italy. During these races gameplay has been very good, no vanishing cars etc although the real world distance has been at least ten times longer. If I want to run a server that works as it should, what specs do I need? -Connection speed? -Separte server machine? -Something else? One more thing: If I want to use the separate nkserver.exe directly, what files/folders do I need to get it running. It seems that I at least need the Tracks folder, right? Im thingking of running the server via wine on our Ubuntu-based lfs-server (100Mbit/100Mbit connection). Thanks in advance
Guest CAR
Hi, I was hoping someone with a little more knowledgeable would answer, but it appears not The v1.03 manual (included with nKPro) has a section on servers (page 82). In terms of connection types, & setups it varies. Some people have cable, some have DSL, some have dedicated servers whilst others just use the machine they're playing on. What really affects a server is if your using VPN/Wi-fi &/or downloading anything via torrents etc or using instant messengers. Also someone told me they discovered nKPro servers use twice as much bandwidth (I think they were coming from LFS). Maybe this is also a factor with some of the issues your having. Oh & the netKarcentral guys use a linux box for their server, I dunno any more details though Edited March 24, 2011 by CAR
