Shift Tweaking Guide

Here's a collection of tweaks and optimizations for NFS:Shift. If you spot any errors or if I left things out, let me know and I'll change or add them.

NFS Shift tweaking

Attachments:

- custom wheel profile(s)

- physicsbootflow.bff file providing less aggressive AI

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Increase performance with ATI cards (until patch is released to fix)

- set AA and AF to Application Controlled in ATI driver/CCC

- set AA and AF to the desired values in the game

- rename shift.exe to grid.exe to invoke better optimization in the ATI driver

- Right click on GRID.EXE (the former shift.exe ), Properties, Tick "Disable Visual Themes", "Disable Desktop Composition" and "Run as Administrator"

- make the game believe you have an nVidia GTX2xx card. This does not increase frame rates so much but it gets rid of the stuttering:

Step 1 find the graphicsconfigdata.xml file that is located in \my documents\NFS Shift\

Step 2 edit that file or open it using notepad

Step 3 find the line that reads: data class="GraphicConfigData" id="0xBB52E0"

Step 4 change that line to read: data class="GraphicConfigData" id="0xBB11E0". All you are doing is changing the digits.

Step 5 save this change by clicking on File then Save

Step 6 exit out of notepad

Step 7 right click on graphicsconfigdata.xml and select Properties

Step 8 Check the box to make it Read-Only and hit the apply button

Step 9 Start NFS Shift. It may crash as it starts up 1-2 times after making this change (don't worry it will eventually play without it crashing again)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Run with low shadows without the game crashing

- set shadows to low

- quit and restart the game

- quit the game again without changing anything

- remove graphicsconfig.xml from the \Documents\NFS Shift\ folder

- run game and set graphics settings including low shadows

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Logitech and Fanatec steering wheels

- If you find the wheel pulling in the wrong direction or excessive left-right swaying when driving straight, modify the wheel settings .xml file in the \Need for Speed SHIFT\ControllerDefaults\PC\ folder, change InputMax value from 11500 to -11500. Editing the .xml file can be done with notepad.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Get better FFB (highly subjective!)

- download custom profile and replace vehicleset_pc_custom_wheel.xml in \Need for Speed SHIFT\ControllerDefaults\PC\ with the downloaded profile. Choose preset 27 in controller menu and re-calibrate axes and/or buttons if necessary.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Map look left/right to steering wheel buttons

- use Logitech Profiler or JoyToKey to map numpad 4 and 6 to wheel buttons

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cure over-sensitive brake pedal response

- set brake pedal sensitivity to a low value or even 0%

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cure default oversteering behaviour (backside stepping out at the slightest turn of the wheel)

- set slider towards Oversteer in quick tuning menu (names have been switched, bug until solved by patch)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Less aggressive AI

- replace physicsbootflow.bff file in the \Need for Speed Shift\Pakfiles\ folder by one of the files attached in the physicsbootflow.zip archive

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Remove in-game movies

- Go into the Movies folder and rename the file extensions, e.g. form .bik to .bak, or just delete them.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Get rid of the replay music

Simply rename or remove the file nfs_racemusic.fsb in the folder Audio/Music. You can also disable the Menu Ambience in the Sound Options, but then you lose the menu music as well.
