Guest CAR Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 Came across this recently. It looks like Barcelona, which's interesting but, don't get too excited as this is a BRD project (which means we'll probably never see it).
Guest CAR Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 (edited) Another video: Also an interesting interview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLOuTk1pLE4 Edited March 28, 2010 by CAR
acmoz Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 I never tried anything like that but looking at it from extern it seems that THIS gives you much more physical sollicitations than that surely extremely expensive thing... Sincerely (without having ever tried anything like that, so I could be totally wrong) platforms like that seem to me a spoof because it doesn't seem to add anything meaningful to the simulated situation : for sure real accelerations are light-years far from those. Is there here anyone who tried something like that who could tell us about real experience on those 3D (or most probably 2D - since from videos I can't see vertical movements) motion platform like that ? Do systems like that *REALLY* add anything to the simulation experience or their unique goal is to attract people to let operators earn money? Could we do a paragon between driving on a simulator with a FFB steering wheel and a non-FFB one and driving on a motion platform and on a static seat ? An FFB steering wheel gives to the driver many more informations than a non-FFB steering wheel. Could we say the same things about motion platforms or motion platforms are only a mental masturbation like purely aesthetic steering wheel modifications?
Guest CAR Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 A little video (by Neil Cole (presenter of the WRC coverage on Dave)) at the launch of Pure Tech Racing.

Could we say the same things about motion platforms or motion platforms are only a mental masturbation like purely aesthetic steering wheel modifications? Hi there, for quite some time i've been working with the Force Dynamics 301 (not owned by me), and of course, i got to drive it quite often. First time i tried it (rfactor, ISI Sauber @Monza), it felt like nightmare. I tought - this is just a showoff. Then i had few days more to test it, now i did it with the rFactor Caterham mod, Live for speed & RBR. And after getting used to it, i started to really like it. And after almost a year, i absolutely loved the thing (well it's been over a year since i last driven on it, not working with it anymore). Thing is, you really need to get used to it, and it takes time. But once you do, it's fantastic experience, it adds tons to the immersion. And getting out of it after one hour of F1 @ Monaco you are dead-tired, sweat is all over you, you are really really exhausted. I know this - i tried it. So it may not reproduce centrifugal forces, but it sure is able to deliver what driving on the edge brings to you (my english failed miserably here). Mentioned that F1@Monaco, on the FD i could really throw the car around, it really helped - so it helps driving also - but this takes time to get used to, just like the ffb of the modern wheels takes time to get used to - you need to learn to read what the device is telling you. Overall, i would love to have something similar, but more civilised, at home - like some small seat wich moves about slightly, just so i have some more info from the sim. I would love to be shaken when i go over a curb.. Or imagine laser scanned tracks with such system... It is worth it. It is good. But, takes time. At first i guess 75% of the "sim racer community" would leave the motion platform with doubts, at best. Edited May 26, 2010 by lovretta
Guest NightShift Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 Thank you for sharing your experience lovretta, that was very interesting.
Guest CAR Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 It appears the rumours are true, they're going to be running Macau/Macao and also introducing another car, the PTR3 (a GP2 car maybe)? Anyhoo Mike Conway still recovering after his Indycar crash was 6th fastest around Aviano in the F1, here's the Facebook group if you want to see some photos.
kunos Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 I am no longer directly involved with BRD so I am free to bring what my experience developing, testing and driving the system you see in the video. I will go through 2 expriences. To be honest, I still remember my days spent int he UK fiddling with the code to interface the motors and thinking into my head: "this is never ever going to work, it's just not like feeling the Gs on your body". Once the system was sort of operational, we needed somebody to test it. Without the full car on the top and with the motors at full war power that thing was VIOLENT and vicious.. and that's the origin of the internal name "velociraptor". It was so scary that nobody wanted to step on it, so it came down to me...cause i was responsable of the code to move it Well, i was on for 3 laps, on the third lap I was under my PB and I was totaly amazed it all felt so natural, direct and communicative. But, of course, I am not a race driver.. so we come to the second part of this story, fast forward to april 2010 when we were invited at the official launch of the PRT center and for the first race I was sent against a couple of GP2 drivers, among them, Chilton and some others i cant remember SORRY!!! Anyway.. i did have a couple of laps with the car we were going to use and the race was held in Aviano.. I honestly went in quite cocky thinking: "they have no chance, I will win this one easily". It wasn't the case .. during the 10 mins qualify the real drivers were amazingly fast in learning the track and they all finished slightly faster than me at the end of the qualify. "I'll have them during the race" I thought.. again, it wasn't the case, and I wasn't able to pass anybody and they all finished before me.
