La Renault vanta una solida tradizione come fornitore di motori per la Formula 1, tradizione che risale al 1983, quando il costruttore francese intraprese per le prima volta la fornitura di motori alla Lotus. I team Lotus, Ligier, Tyrrell, Williams e Benetton hanno tutti corso con propulsori Renault in momenti diverse durante gli Anni ottanta e novanta, conquistando un totale di 80 vittorie nei Gran Premi.
