Features Two Hours of Corvette Racing at Sebring

Same-Day Tribute to 58th Annual Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring

Revisits Legendary GT1-Spec Corvette C6.R

Bedford, MA (March 8, 2010) - For nearly 60 years sports cars have competed at the facility now called Sebring International Raceway. And the now-retired GT1-class Chevrolet Corvette C6.R, recently replaced by a milder GT2 version of America's premier sports car, was the most technically advanced, fastest - and certainly most fearsome - production-based road-racing car ever to compete at Sebring or any other road circuit.

The 120 Minutes of Sebring, a tribute to America's oldest sports car race that runs on Saturday, March 20, concurrently with this year's Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, is the third stop on iRacing.com's 2010 World Tour. The two-hour online racing event is a chance for iRacers all over the world to celebrate the 58th running of this classic endurance race and to experience the awesome performance of the American Le Mans Series GT1-class Corvette CR6.

"The 12 Hours of Sebring was America's first truly international race," said Kevin Bobbitt, iRacing.com's director of marketing. "And today Sebring is probably the best-known American sports car race among the global community of sports car racing fans. Like all of our World Tour events, the 120 Minutes of Sebring is open to every iRacing member, regardless of their level of experience with racing games or simulations. Given that a third of our members live outside North America, and that the race is being held on the weekend, we expect a large proportion of the entry to come from our international online racing community."

Qualifying begins March 14th at 00:00 GMT, with 20-minute open sessions starting throughout the week start at 30 minutes past the hour. The race takes the green at 12 noon EDT (16:00 GMT) on Saturday, March 20th.

Sebring International Raceway

Laid out on the runways of a World War II air base and the adjacent roadways, Sebring International Raceway is the oldest permanent road-racing circuit in the United States. It hosted its first race on New Year's Eve, 1950, a six-hour handicap event won by a diminutive Crosley Hotshot two-seat roadster. The first "12-Hour Grand Prix of Endurance" was held 15 months later, in March, 1952, and for several years Sebring was the site of America's only real international races.

The original racecourse was the longest in North America, at more than five miles around. Today Sebring International Raceway has three configurations, the longest of which is the 3.7-mile circuit used for the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring. If iRacing.com's virtual version of the track, which features every corner and car-busting bump with millimeter accuracy, were any more authentic, you could smell the oranges in the adjacent citrus groves.

Chevrolet Corvette C6.R

The Chevrolet Corvette is the definitive American sports car, and the C6.R is the ultimate production-based racing version of this iconic automobile. The American Le Mans Series GT1 champion in each of the five years it competed, the C6.R won the GT1 class in its final appearance at Sebring and was retired from real-world competition following last year's victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

"All of us on the team and at General Motors are proud of the success that the GT1-class C6.R achieved during its racing career," said Doug Fehan, Corvette Racing Program Manager at Pratt & Miller, the team that developed and campaigned the car in the real world. "It's good to know that in the virtual world this car will continue to compete, and that the fans who have supported us over the years will have the opportunity to experience the C6.R for themselves through the creativity and innovations at iRacing."

With 590 horsepower and a flat-line 620 foot-pound (868Nm) torque curve propelling a 2425 lbs (1100 kg) package, the 7.0-liter V8-powered C6.R provides stunning performance.

More than 370 online racers worldwide competed in the iRacing.com 120 Minutes of Sebring on Saturday, piloting their Corvette C6.Rs around fabled Sebring International Raceway. Featuring ten splits, the event was staged between 12 noon and 2 pm eastern time when Speed television network cut-away from its live coverage of the Mobile 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring.

Italy’s Max Dell’Orco  turned the fastest lap of all the iRacers, posting a 1:54.658 en route to a 52 second victory over countryman Dario Frattini. Dell’Orco completed 62 laps of the 3.7 mile virtual circuit, tops among the ten race winners. Other winners included Kyle Vesa (Eastern Canada), Martin Buchan (Club Celtic), Jonathan Pierson (New England), Kevin Gries (Midwest), Francesco Segato (Italy), Steve Claeys (Benelux), Dino Ratliffe (England), Peter Alnutt (England) and Scott Heckert (Connecticut).
