Lo avevamo già anticipato tempo fa, ma ora è arrivata la conferma ufficiale: John Riccitiello, CEO di Electronic Arts, ha infatti ammesso che il team Criterion, responsabile storico della serie di Burnout, è attualmente al lavoro sul capitolo di Need for Speed che uscirà dopo Need for Speed: Shift, quindi presumibilmente a fine 2010. Pressato sulla possibile "fusione" delle due serie in un unico franchise, Riccitiello ha escluso che ciò avvenga ma ha anche rimandato il prossimo Burnout a data da destinarsi, lasciando intendere che la serie è sospesa fino a nuovo ordine.
"We've taken the Burnout team and combined it with our Need For Speed franchise, So we now have that in our favor because that Burnout team is probably one of the more online-centric and notably high-quality game developers that we have out at Criterion."
