The Ardennes in Belgium are known for the advances of the German armies into Belgium in two world wars, and for Hitler's last, big counteroffensive in 1944, leading to the Battle of the Bulge. Furthermore, a race-track originally connecting the towns of Spa, Malmedy and Stavelot in a triangular shape, and dating back to 1920, is located in and around the forest.Dropped from the Formula 1 calendar in 1969 when the race was boycotted due to the dangers of the 14 km (9 mi) high-speed track; rain could be pouring down over one part of the circuit while other parts were completely dry, as illustrated in the John Frankenheimer movie Grand Prix, Spa-Francorchamps made it back to the F1 schedule in 1983, and with few exceptions since then (2003 and 2006), the Belgian Grand Prix has been staged on the shortened and safer 7 km (4.3 mile) track.
