Nissan Motor Company Australia andSony Computer Entertainment Australia (SCE Aust.) are today pleased to announce that the internationally-acclaimed GT Academy program will be racing to Australian shores in 2014.

Following high demand from fans, the nation’s virtual racers will get the opportunity to turn their love for car racing into a real life experience by participating in the award winning virtual-to-reality competition, Nissan PlayStation® GT Academy.

To earn their grid position, racing driver hopefuls are asked to demonstrate their skill and determination to keep their name at the top of the Gran Turismo®6 leader board, only possible on PlayStation®3 (PS3™). The top gamers will be invited to compete at a live National Final event, where the best competitors will then be selected and sent to the International finals, hosted at Silverstone Circuit in the United Kingdom, to represent Australia.

The winner of the International final will get the chance to become a professional race driver, as they’re put through an intensive Driver Development Programme to ready them for the chance to compete for Nissan at the Dubai 24 Hours.

Starting the journey from virtual to reality is simple. The nation’s top 14 Gran Turismo® gamers will be identified via recording a series of online time trials using pre-selected digital Nissan vehicles available only through PS3 exclusive, Gran Turismo 6. An additional 14 gamers will be selected from live events to be held at V8 Supercars Championship events and other public events around Australia.

The collective 28 will participate in a National Final event where they will battle in special racing pods during a series of Gran Turismo 6 rounds, driving skill challenges in a real Nissan sports-car, a fitness challenge and a media test.

The top six performers from these National Finals are then invited to take part in the Final Selection Round – an intense Race Camp competition held at the famous Silverstone Circuit.

The Australian finalists will compete against 24 international hopefuls, getting the opportunity to compete in on-track evaluations, driving some of Nissan’s best road and race cars.

GT Academy’s inaugural winner, Lucas Ordonez, has gone on to become the poster boy for ‘virtual to reality’ racing. The Spaniard became the Blancpain Endurance Series Pro-Am champion in 2013 and was a podium finisher at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the LM P2 class in both 2011 and 2013.

Ordonez also got his first taste of a V8 Supercar last year, driving a Nissan Altima V8 Supercar in a test day at Winton.

Another GT Academy graduate, Wolfgang Reip, recently competed in Australia as part of the Nismo Athlete Global Team in the Bathurst 12 Hour alongside Nissan Motorsport driver Rick Kelly in a Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3 car.

And just last week it was confirmed that 22-year-old Jann Mardenborough, another former GT Academy graduate, will contest the GP3 Series with Arden International in 2014, while also joining an intensive driver development program with Infiniti Red Bull Racing, the most successful Formula One team of recent times. Mardenborough joined Ordonez on the LM P2 podium at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2013.

Peter Jones – Managing Director & CEO, Nissan Motor Company Australia:

“Innovation and excitement sit at the heart of Nissan and GT Academy is a perfect example of this in action,” said Peter Jones.

“This ground-breaking talent search program has been hugely successful overseas. Now that it’s in Australia I can’t wait for it to unearth and develop our country’s next great motor racing star.”

Michael Ephraim – Managing Director, Sony Computer Entertainment Australia:

“The GT franchise continues to be extremely important to PlayStation, and we are proud of our close partnership with Nissan,” said Michael Ephraim, Managing Director, SCE Australia.

“GT Academy is an exceptional programme and we look forward to following the journey of the fastest Aussie GT gamers as they transfer their skills to the real-world!”

  • Gran Turismo®6 gamers have the chance to become a Nissan NISMO racing driver
  • Previous GT Academy champions now racing in GP3 and Le Mans 24 Hours

Nissan and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe have announced that gamer-to-real-racer competition the NISMO PlayStation® GT Academy returns for a sixth instalment in 2014. Online qualifying on PlayStation’s Gran Turismo®6 game begins on 21 April.

Proof of the success of the virtual-to-reality competition can be seen in the stunning on-track results of its graduates. Briton Jann Mardenborough, a Le Mans 24-hour podium finisher, will compete in Formula One™ feeder series GP3 in 2014. His meteoric rise since winning GT Academy in 2011 sees him racing for Arden International while also undertaking a Red Bull Racing Driver Development Programme.

Meanwhile, inaugural-winner, Spaniard Lucas Ordoñez takes his talents overseas in 2014 to race for NISMO in the competitive Japanese Super GT Championship. Lucas and 2012 GT Academy champion Wolfgang Reip (Belgium) will also contest this summer’s Le Mans 24 Hour race in Nissan’s fascinating ZEOD RC ‘Garage 56’ entry.

Fuelled by this success, GT Academy’s global footprint continues to grow. Champions will be selected in 2014 from competitions in Europe, Germany, USA and a new International GT Academy comprising Australia, India, Middle East (UAE, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and Kuwait), Mexico and Thailand.

GT Academy Europe 2014 is comprised of France, Italy, UK, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Russia, Sweden, Poland and Czech Republic.

After completing an intensive three-month Driver Development Programme, rated among the best in the world, the five global GT Academy 2014 champions will qualify for the ultimate prize  - driving a Nissan in the gruelling Dubai 24 Hour race in January next year.

NISMO’s Global Head of Brand Marketing and Sales, Darren Cox, commented, “Nissan and NISMO are proud to launch the sixth instalment of GT Academy with our friends at PlayStation and Polyphony Digital. Six years ago this innovative approach was seen as a risk, but it is now a firmly established route to professional motorsport. GT Academy started in Europe but is now expanding globally with new editions being launched in several emerging markets. To highlight the global nature, our European winners have become NISMO Athletes and are racing across the globe in several top level championships. We are looking forward to discovering even more new stars in 2014. Anyone who thinks they have what it takes should give GT Academy a go. Not everyone can win, but the experience is hugely rewarding at every stage of the competition.”

Kazunori Yamauchi, President of Polyphony Digital, explained: "I am very proud that GT Academy has returned for its sixth season, and that Gran Turismo together with Nissan will once again serve as the platform for the development of new racing drivers, whom otherwise would not have had the chance to pursue their dreams. Even if you don’t make it through to the next round of GT Academy, the GT6 qualifying challenge will improve your skills as a driver and all players taking part will be rewarded with in-game credits to enhance their experience.”

As well as entering GT Academy via Gran Turismo 6 for PlayStation®3, racing driver hopefuls can also get involved via a series of live events and for the first time, through a Facebook based challenge. Entry details can be found on: www.facebook.com/GTAcademy and http://gran-turismo.com.

QUALIFYING NOW LIVE FOR NISMO PLAYSTATION GT ACADEMY
22 aprile 2014 alle ore 12.28

* Do you have what it takes to go from Gran Turismo®6 to the real race track?

* Nissan and PlayStation looking for next gamer-to-racer star

The 2014 season of the NISMO PlayStation® GT Academy competition is now live, giving Gran Turismo®6 virtual racers another opportunity to realise their dreams of becoming a real-life professional racing driver.

GT Academy has successfully challenged the traditional and costly route into professional motorsport and in 2014 gamers have more ways than ever to enter the competition. Anyone in a participating country with Gran Turismo 6 and a PlayStation®3 will be able to enter the free qualifying rounds within the game’s automatic online update. Racing driver hopefuls can also get involved via a series of live events and, for the first time, through a Facebook based GT Academy Challenge, which will launch in May.

Kazunori Yamauchi, President of Polyphony Digital, is excited to see qualifying begin for GT Academy 2014. “I am very happy that qualifying has now begun for a sixth season of GT Academy, kick starting our search to unearth another gamer with the talent to become a real life racer. Every GT6™ gamer will have the chance to develop their skills in a series of stunning Nissan NISMO vehicles and compare lap times with their friends while competing for a coveted spot at the next stage of the competition.”

The successful PlayStation gamers from UK, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Russia, Sweden, Poland and Czech Republic will win a place at a National Final event held in their country. From there, the leading competitors will qualify for the European Race Camp at the world-famous Silverstone Circuit, an established week-long bootcamp where the finalists will be put through their paces on and off the track, to unearth this year’s GT Academy champion.

As well as the European competition, the GT Academy programme has also been extended in 2014 with the addition of GT Academy International (Australia, India, Mexico, Middle East and Thailand), as well as North America (USA and Canada) and Germany.

The overall winner from each GT Academy will receive three months’ intensive training to prepare them for taking to the track with Nissan at the Dubai 24 Hour race in January 2015. In Dubai they’ll go wheel-to-wheel with experienced racing drivers and have the chance to prove themselves worthy of becoming a NISMO Athlete, one of the elite racing drivers competing for Nissan under the banner of its motor sport arm, NISMO.

With qualifying now open, this is the chance for today’s GT6 gamers to follow in the footsteps of previous GT Academy winners who have gone from sofa to pro thanks to this innovative collaboration between Nissan and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. Last year’s champion Miguel Faísca is competing in the Blancpain Endurance Series this season, and Lucas Ordoñez (2008 champion) will be racing alongside Wolfgang Reip (2012 champion) in the mould-breaking Nissan ZEOD RC at the Le Mans 24 Hours. Meanwhile, Jann Mardenborough (2011 champion) now has an eye on a career in Formula One®, having secured a GP3 drive in 2014 with Arden International and being selected to take part in a bespoke Red Bull Racing Driver Development Programme.

“Everyone should enter GT Academy!” encourages NISMO Athlete Mardenborough, who is about to start competing in a Formula One® feeder series less than three years after winning the competition. “It’s open for anyone to enter. If you have a PlayStation 3 and a copy of Gran Turismo 6, just see how you go against everyone across Europe - that’s all I had in mind the year I won. If being a racing driver was your childhood dream, then the NISMO PlayStation GT Academy is your perfect opportunity to live it!”

The GT Academy qualifying update is available to access now on GT6 and can be played until 07:59 BST (08:59 CET) on 16 June. It is available to anyone with a PSN (PlayStation®Network) ID and a copy of Gran Turismo 6.

Entry details can be found on http://gran-turismo.com and the 'How to Enter' tab on our Facebook page, here: http://on.fb.me/1lyHnwj
