Racing in the wet is one of the biggest challenges a driver will face, and one that as fans, we all love to watch. It’s the great leveller of machinery and the moment when great F1 drivers can outshine their cars, showing off their incredible feel and car control. Think Schumacher in Spain in '96, Hamilton at Silverstone in '08, Senna at Monaco in '84, Senna at Donington in '93 or, Senna any time it happened to rain. Or, as it happens, any other time. Today, I’m going to explain why racing in the wet is such a challenge and the techniques great F1 drivers use - to extract the most from their machinery in rainy conditions. But first I’d love to get your thoughts… who, current or otherwise, is the greatest F1 wet weather driver ever? Let's get a poll going - leave your answer in the comments below.
Data logging or acquisition is now commonly used across all forms of motorsport. In this Driver's University tutorial, our driver coach, Scott Mansell, takes an overall look at how to use data logging and how it can help you become faster on track. This introductory tutorial is the first in a mini-series that will detail how to make the most out of data logging as drivers. For more driving technique tutorials: https://driver61.com/uni There are many motorsport data logging systems available on the market, from GPS-only units to HD video systems that can log hundreds of channels. As drivers we don't necessarily need hundreds of channels of information - these are usually for engineers to check various information from the engine, suspension and tyres enabling them to understand exactly what's happening dynamically with the car. To make the most out of data logging as a driver, the best option is something like the vBox Video HD2 or Aim Solo 2 systems which includes GPS data, two cameras and the opportunity to include channels such as throttle position and brake pressure. As drivers, the most important channels are speed, throttle position, brake pressure and RPM.

How realistic is a VR sim racing compared to real-life racing? Our pro-driver, Scott Mansell tests a VR sim to see how it can help racing drivers train for real-world events. For this test, Scott is using racing sim software, Assetto Corsa and the Oculus Rift headset.
We always get asked by racing drivers, how useful sim racing is to improve their learning and to apply it to real-world racing. In this our pro-driver, Scott Mansell, finds out. Scott had driven various racing sims before, but last week was invited by SIMTECHPRO in Barcelona to test one of their professional grade sims. In this video, Scott explains exactly how realistic the racing sim is, how it compares to real-world racing and how racing drivers could use a sim to improve their real-world results. The sim Scott's using here includes a Thrustmaster T500RS and SIMTECHPRO's Pro 2 pedals set view through 3 Samsung Curved 27" monitors - we'll leave the full list in the description.
Scott Mansell (born 1 October 1985 in Birmingham, England) is a British racing driver. An alumnus of Bishop Vesey's Grammar School in Sutton Coldfield, Mansell was the 2004 EuroBOSS champion. He has not competed a full series championship since. Scott was a 2004 McLaren Autosport BRDC Award nominee, losing out to eventual winner Paul di Resta. He is not related to the 1992 Formula One world champion, Nigel Mansell. In 2009 he was the replacement for Duncan Tappy in the Superleague Formula for Galatasaray. This was his first race since the 2006 United States Grand Prix-supporting round of the Indy Pro Series. Mansell set a lap record for the Brands Hatch Indy circuit; 38.032 seconds during the 2004 EuroBOSS season. As well as the Brands Hatch record, Mansell has also broken lap records at Silverstone, Donington Park, Lausitzring and Zolder in 2004. In the same year Mansell won the BBC Midlands Young Sportsperson of the Year as well as being nominated for the Autosport Club Driver of the Year Award.
