MK: You too and buona fortuna e successo nel 2017!

DI: Max, can you give us a brief presentation of yourself and your racing history?
MK: My name is Max Koebolt and I am a 19 years old racing driver from The Netherlands. I started racing in the end of 2006. As every racing driver I started with karting. In my first season of karting I already became Dutch champion. In the second and third year I also won the national championship. In 2010, I started to do international races. At that time I was driving with guys like Esteban Ocon, Charles Leclerc, Lance Stroll and my fellow Dutchman Max Verstappen. With him I spent a lot of time, because we drove in the same team, Kart CRG. In 2011 I stopped racing, because it was too much stress for me that time, because I had to go to a special school and had 25 races a year.
In 2013 I started racing again, but in cars this time. My first race was in a Suzuki Swift and I became third. The next year I decided to take a big step and drive a Corvette GT car of the team Dayvtec Engineering. I drove the Supercar Challenge and in my first full season of car racing I became champion and youngest driver to win an official FIA GT championship. With that win a got a lot of attention from international teams. In the winter of 2014/2015 I tested with several teams and decided to drive the Blancpain GT Endurance series with WRT Audi. 2015 was a learning year for me, because the level in the Blancpain GT series is the highest in the world of GT racing. In 2016 I continued to drive in de Blancpain GT series, but with BMW Team Italia by ROAL Motorsport, the team of Roberto Ravaglia.

DI: In the past, many drivers admitted they were using racing games to learn tracks, even if those titles were probably used mainly as a sort of fun. With the progress in technology and software, nowadays we have commercial softwares that can already offer an incredibly high quality of simulation: when did you get in touch with these simulators?
MK: Well I actually played racing games since I was 3 years old. When I was 7 or 8 I got my first simulator. I used that one for 7 years. Nowadays I have a Playseat F1 with Fanatec pedals and steering wheel. I drive it a lot for fun, but I also use it to prepare for races or testdays. Mainly I use it to learn new tracks, but if I already know the track I just drive it to remember it and to build up a rhythm. A rhythm is very important for a driver, because if you have to focus too much on remembering and drive constantly on a track, you lose time that you could spend on working on a setup. I use Assetto Corsa as simulator software, because for me the physics are very good and are the most realistic at the moment.

DI: On the forum you provided some useful feedback on the BMW M6 GT3 you drove in Assetto Corsa: how does it feel compared to the real one, how does it respond to setup changes? Did you try the other GT cars the simulator offers?
MK: With the default setup the car handling feeling is not really like the real one, but with some changes the handling is very like the real BMW M6 GT3. When you look at the setup, most default setups are not that good and realistic, but again with some changes you can make it more realistic. It is just a game of trial and error. The changes you made are not always the same as in real life, because you can’t put in factors like chassis movement and stuff like that. With this you have to try different setup changes, but changes like ARB setting and spring stiffness are mostly the same as in real life and of course gears are the same. Before the BMW M6 GT3 mod was released, I used a similar kind of car, like the Nissan GTR GT3 or the Bentley GT3, because this are all front engine turbo powered cars.

DI: What is the most useful aspect in driving a simulator? Do you take it seriously and run long training sessions or do you prefer to run shorter runs and maybe having fun against other players?
MK: The most useful aspect of driving a simulator is to get a rhythm and know tracks, but I also use it to drive long stints. The only pity of simulators is that on simulators it is more difficult to drive long stints than in real life, because it is harder to get your braking point right. When you drive on the limit, every meter of later braking counts. But with that last aspect you really learn to drive very concentrated.

DI: We know that replicating the feeling of a real car is difficult, even with a dynamic platform. Is there something that you would like to see improved in order to close even more the gap between virtual and reality?
MK: Nowadays with the introduction of Virtual Reality, this gap between reality and the digital world is getting closer, but it is still in a developing period, so I still prefer a TV screen in front of me. I think that a good set of racing pedals can also make a big different. To start, you really need load cell brakes to have the same way of braking like a real car.

DI: Does your team has its own simulator? Do your team mates use it at home too?
MK: From what I know, my team does not own a simulator. I don’t know if my team mates use it, because we don’t really talk about sim racing. We mainly talk about the car and how the weekend goes.

DI:Thank you for your time, enjoy your stay on Driving Italia and... best wishes for your 2017!
MK: You too and buona fortuna e successo nel 2017!

Great interview. Thanks for sharing. Would be nice to drive some setups made by Max to see what is like to have a "close to real life" experience.
