Intel chief executive Brian Krzanich showed onstage how his company’s RealSense camera, which can sense and digitize the environment it sees, will be integrated into games.

Intel made the announcement at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco. Razer is using the Intel RealSense camera in a product that will debut next year. The camera will be able to capture images of the gamer and integrate that into the gameplay, Krzanich said in his keynote speech at a big Intel event.

He also showed a racing game, Skylake, created by iRacing and VRX. The game included a full-fledged racing simulator with a RealSense camera attached to it. The camera sees where the car driver’s face is looking during the simulation.

With RealSense, Intel and Razer said that consumers can expect better game broadcasting and virtual reality gaming. For instance, a gaming laptop with the camera will have the ability to change backgrounds while streaming.

“Razer is excited to be working with Intel, using Intel RealSense technology to help pioneer work for game broadcasting, as well as with VR, with support from the growing OSVR movement,” said Min-Liang Tan, co-founder and CEO of Razer, in a statement. “Gamers will, we expect, be able to enhance their broadcasting and VR experience in unprecedented ways.”

Intel RealSense-powered cameras provide motion and gesture recognition, and 3D scanning.

“This is a great opportunity to make Intel RealSense technology easily accessible to the gaming and VR communities,” said Achin Bhowmik, general manager of Perceptual Computing at Intel, in a statement. “We are proud of the beautiful design of Razer’s Intel RealSense Camera peripheral and we look forward to enabling innovation in the gaming world together.”
