In its latest horsepower-packed ode to stock cars, NASCAR Thunder 2004, Electronic Arts journeys to a PC world blissfully free of a solid competitor. Papyrus' groundbreaking NASCAR Racing series quietly departed earlier this year--an unfortunate and much-mourned victim of spiraling licensing costs--and games like Hasbro's NASCAR Heat are now just a distant memory. To EA's credit, it hasn't stood pat. Enlisting, for a second year, the services of Image Space, the same team responsible for EA's critically acclaimed F1 Formula 1 simulation, it has upgraded and clearly improved upon last year's questionable NASCAR Thunder 2003. Yet it hasn't quite raised the bar high enough to make any serious sim driver forget about the NASCAR Racing series. As it sits, NASCAR Thunder is a competent game that looks like it's only going to get better as time goes on.

E' il momento di Nascar Thunder 2004. Dopo screenshots vari e i primi file di modifica ecco arrivare una recensione, da parte dei ragazzi di IGN riguardo la versione Playstation 2:

The most notable addition to the console versions is "Grudges and Alliances." The goal behind this feature is to finally deliver on the promise to make you feel like you're racing against flesh and blood human beings, and not just AI drones plodding along in circles for the duration of the race. The other goal was to make more honest drivers out of all of us, by making us pay for using other drivers as bumper cushions for us to bounce off instead of using discipline and skill to hold our racing lines.

Handling – this aspect it’s changed if compared to CMR3: now the cars seems “more realisticâ€: the impression of a central point which help the car to go now it’s gone. You have to drive quietly and safety for keeping the car on the road: if you exceed in speed or something similar, you will crash your car without doubts...I’ve tested it, and I can say that now it’s required a good driving...

#CONTINUE#
Damage – well, now the damage seems even harder...the car can be damaged more than CMR3, and this will affect the car reaction: you can try to hit something hard and the car will begin to be undriveable, but many times, at the max level of damage available (which are normal, heavy or expert) the car will require the complete retire from the rally...maybe this can seems too much, but at least it’s realistic, and will let you drive more accurately.
Graphic – it’s like the previous game, but with some enhancements: 3d crowd watching the car (not all the crowd, but many of them), more reflections, more detailed scenery and cars...but I have to say that two times I’ve seen a little stutte when you finish off the track and there are many things around...nothing important, but it’s better if you know that.
Sound – I think that it’s the same of CMR3, maybe the car’s engines sounds differents, but nothing very noticeable...

With the upcoming release of BGN/CTS and Trans Am, and keeping in mind the WC we have, which division has the most technically accurate modeling? And why?

The Cup car is definitely the most accurate. That's really been the main model for the NR series and Manuel Daskalos, Chief Engineer of the #77 Jasper Motorsports team as well as Goodyear have provided a ton of real world data. The Busch cars and trucks are also modeled off of real world data but not to the same extent. Having said that, we've received quite a few comments from real drivers that the Busch car and Craftsman truck drives pretty realistically. The TA mod is the least accurate and is basically advertised as a generic road course model. Having said that, it's really not that far off of the SCCA specs.
