SURPRISE! It’s a mid-week Road Book, just because we’re getting to the business end of things now – and that means we’ve got plenty of stuff to talk about! How are we all, are we all excited for the launch of DiRT 4? Yeeeeah, us too. ;)

Host of the German GP for 35 years, the Hockenheimring is one of the tracks with the richest heritage in the world of motorsports. Historically known for its bygone classic layout with long straights through the surrounding forests, the track was reformed for the 2002 German GP, becoming much shorter modern circuit but retaining a high speed, flowing nature perfectly suited for wheel-to-wheel racing with all types of cars. This pack features 4 distinct versions of this legendary track from 4 different decades - 1977, 1988, 2001 and 2016, along with extra modern layouts (National, Short A & B). * The Custom Season Tool should be fairly intuitive to use - run the tool, select a series you wish to create a custom championship for, customize the calendar from all available track layouts, set up the scoring system (including option for separate points for multiple heat results, pole position, laps led), some basic rules and then save when you´re satisfied - your custom championship will then be listed in Championship mode for the series it was based on, and you can further customize it with the usual championship options in-game (opponent cars, opponent strength, race distance, number of heats, quali, tire / wear multipliers etc).

** Since arms are added as objects rather than 3D animation, they´re not articulated nor do they have gear shifting animations; for the same reason steering wheel rotation animation is limited to 90º in each direction when driver arms are installed; in some cars, driver arms configuration is merged with seat position and / or cockpit type; Most cars have visible driver arms from external view irrespective of whether cockpit configuration is used or not - exception being vehicles where this solution was not considered to look acceptable - specifically karts and Formula Truck do not feature driver arms.

*** In case of series with drivers featuring in multiple categories (ex Barrichello who is a driver in V10, StockV8, Kart) in order to get the series-correct team / driver performance, tire wear and start skill, user is advised to select the specific series rather than All Cars / Tracks

JUST ANNOUNCED: The 2017 Ford GT will be coming to iRacing - slated for the June build. Both the Ford and Ferrari 488 GTE have been completed and submitted for approval. Here's the official statement from iRacing President Tony Gardner:

"We previously announced that we licensed and that we are building the Ferrari 488 GTE car.

What we did not announce but I’m happy to announce now is that we also licensed the Ford GT GTE car that won Le Mans last year.

I am also glad to say both cars are completed and submitted for manufacturer approval. That can take a short amount (days) of time or quite a bit of time (weeks). They also could come back asking for tweaks or with questions which delays the process.

However our hope is both or at least one car will be in the early June build. If not, we will release upon approval. We also cannot release any videos or photos until approved FYI.

Our plans for these cars in regard to the official series is to put both cars in the IMSA series in the same class. We would take the GT3 cars out of that series, the Porsche would stay in the IMSA series.

The iRacing Le Mans race starts June 10th. We hope that one or both of the cars are in the initial build or very shortly after so any interested members would have enough time to get in some practice for that race. Odds are quite good that will be the case. We would put one or both cars in the Le Mans race if that is the case, again in the same class. We would likely pull the Ford GT2 car out of the race. Therefore it would be the HPD, the two GT1 cars and one or both of the GTE cars. In the chance we don’t have a GTE car, we would keep the Ford GT2 car in place and still run the race that day.

 Good racing!"

Q: In terms of the simulation itself: presumably there are two aspects to this. The first is the driver, and the second is what you, as an engineer, is getting out of the simulation. Are you looking at the interaction between the driver and the simulation, or are you actually looking at it purely from an engineering perspective?

Kenny Krajnik: I would say both. We have a lot of different simulation tools available to us, and one of those is the driver-in-the-loop simulation—very similar to a computer game, but one where the driver sits in a moving platform that can represent g-loading and so on. In that case, we can apply setup changes to the model, and the driver will go do a few laps and give us his comments on those changes. We can use that to correlate our simulation models, as well as consider potential setup changes that could be useful in the future.
