Whether or not you've invested in a console yet you can't have missed the fact that, in its short life, the Xbox has attracted a huge number of racers towards its gargantuan body. Not all of them are great, granted, but aside from the absence of Digital Polyphony's Gran Turismo series (sadly PS2 exclusive), it could be argued that the Xbox is the best console for race fans. However, despite trying as hard as they can, M$'s green machine is not yet the host of the best racer ever. I believe this is all changing with Project Gotham Racing 2 (PGR2).

In fact, the problem is that TrackMania exposes the simple fact that modern racing games are often pretentious, overblown affairs, and they simply can't match this for sheer fun. It almost feels awkward to play something this understated, but once you get over that you realise that all you need to have fun is a few squares of track snapped together creatively - and that you don't need in-game radio stations, real-time reflections or modern cityscapes to make your case.

First and foremost, this is a solid racing game. There’s a good variety of tracks, a large number of cars and excellent physics. The graphics are above par, and it’s genuinely fun to play. Hardcore Mercedes-Benz fans will fall in love with World Racing because it allows them to put vintage vehicles and prototype models through their paces.

I honestly can't recommend this enough. After a lot of hype on the Xbox circuit I was waiting to be let down, but PGR2 provides everything you could want from a racer and more. The superb Live integration is a very tasty cherry on an already delicious cake and in no way means the single player experience is any less fulfilling. If you don't already own an Xbox (or even a console) I'd say this Xmas may well be the time to put one on your list.

With only a small handful of riders, and "real-to-life" tracks as believably real as Michael Jackson's face, FIM Speedway Grand Prix is one title you should avoid at all costs, unless you want a shiny new coaster to add to the collection. Big City Games have done an awful job in even deciding to publish this title, and should be punished for releasing such a half-assed attempt at a game into the community. For shame.

Action Vault: As an introduction to TrackMania, what kind of game is it? What is its basic premise or high-level concept, and what will set your game apart from other racing / action titles?

Florent Castelnerac: TrackMania is a building and driving toy. We wanted to reproduce the kind of magic you experienced with Lego, slot car building kits and Hot Wheels. We don't know how to do it because everybody knows magicians do not exist; that's only in our imagination. So that is where we find the magic in TrackMania - in the player's imagination. You can build the track you want and that's what makes it really apart.
