SteelSeries and Ignite Game Technologies Announce Hardware Development Partnership for New Online Race Game - Simraceway

Leading Gaming Peripherals Maker and Online Auto Racing Company Join Forces to Enhance Online Racing

August 09, 2011 10:45 AM Eastern Daylight Time

CHICAGO & SAN FRANCISCO--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--Today, SteelSeries, the leading manufacturer of premium-quality, competitive gaming peripherals and Ignite Game Technologies, an online gaming company focused on building a new form of auto racing game, announced their partnership and plans to bring an exclusive new form of racing controller to market, later this year. The partnership is being announced today in conjunction with the announcement of Ignite’s online racing game environment, Simraceway™.

“The reason we founded Ignite was to examine ways to improve the racing game and we feel it wouldn't be possible to achieve that goal without looking at how users physically interface with racing games”

The joint venture was formed to examine innovative ways to improve driving game controllers and will leverage SteelSeries’ deep expertise in professional gaming equipment with unique expertise developed from Ignites' research into improving the racing game. The hardware will be designed to work with all major PC racing titles but will work particularly well with Ignite’s just announced online racing game environment – Simraceway.

“It has been a part of who we are as a company to collaborate with professional gaming teams in identifying features and technologies that will enhance gameplay; whether it’s with peripherals that improve how teams hear approaching footsteps in an FPS, or the ability to create multiple layers of macros for more efficient raiding in MMO’s, it’s this joint force that sets what we do apart from the rest,” said Bruce Hawver, CEO of SteelSeries. “The Ignite team has applied that same outlook to their gaming platform, by working with the best, most recognized drivers in auto racing. We’re thrilled to be partnering with them, in supporting both the launch of the new online racing community and by teaming up to bring a new, original product to the market, later this year.”

For the past 10 years, SteelSeries has worked with competitive gaming teams to support, design and build peripherals that will impact and improve their professional game-play, while Ignite has focused on developing the most realistic live, online racing environment. The new racing environment, Simraceway, set to launch this fall, will feature simulation grade driving physics and have a strong focus on close, hard, live multiplayer racing. Some of the world’s top racing drivers will be using the environment for both practice and fun and will be competing alongside everyday gamers. To further enhance this environment, SteelSeries and Ignite Game Technologies are working together to create a unique device that will greatly improve upon current racing game controllers.

“The reason we founded Ignite was to examine ways to improve the racing game and we feel it wouldn't be possible to achieve that goal without looking at how users physically interface with racing games,” said Jonathan Haswell, CEO of Ignite. “We are excited to bring our thoughts in this area to life and fully explore the realism improvements that can be achieved through combining Simraceway's racing game environment directly with a custom hardware solution. It is exciting to have a partner with the brand and depth of experience of SteelSeries, with which to do that.”

Reinventing the wheel? – Simraceway and Steel Series partner to create a new racing game controller

One of the things that has really stood out for us as a problem with racing games is disparity in controllers.

Somewhere along the line we’ve somehow convinced ourselves, possibly with a little help from the console platforms, that it’s OK to use joypads for racing games and (probably about) 80% of current users still do. It’s not and we shouldn’t, it’s just absurd.

Let me explain. If we were to design the first racing game today, do we really think anyone would agree a binary controller joypad in which you can only put ALL of the throttle or ALL of the braking, on or off, at one time with NO progression, whatsoever, would be considered OK?

Of course there is an alternative – steering wheel and pedal sets – but the downside of these is that they take up a lot of space, are fussy to set up and down and are expensive! A good set is $200+ (G27, yes please), $300 if you want something really nice (Fanatec GT3RS yes, yes) or $500+ if you’re looking for the best of the best (Thrustmaster T500 – oohhhh).

To us it feels as though this is wrong and that there should be something in the chasm between $30 joypads with no serious control and the multi hundred dollar gleaming set ups of the rich and sim rigged.

So, as we highlighted with our second announcement today – our partnership with Steel Series professional gaming gear – we’ve got involved in creating a new form of steering wheel. One that has the control fidelity of a high end wheel but comes in a more convenient package; both in terms of size/ portability and price.

If you don’t know Steel Series they are a company with an incredible range of competitive gaming products from their pro FPS gamer keyboards to their custom mouse for World of Warcraft, to their now legendary headsets. We find it both humbling and flattering that they got our vision for the online racing space and even more so that they wanted to partner up and create a new form of racing controller.

It’s really not every day you get to make your own video game and it’s definitely not every day you get to make a steering wheel to interface with it. Awesomely exciting is the only way for us to describe this partnership.

We look forward to letting you know a little more about this project and partnership as we move forward in the coming months. Meanwhile here’s the full release.

STEELSERIES AND IGNITE GAME TECHNOLOGIES INTRODUCE THE SIMRACEWAY® SRW-SI STEERING WHEEL

High-Performance, Low-Cost Motion-Sensor Wheel to Bring Authentic Racing Experience Within Reach of a Whole New Audience

CHICAGO and SAN FRANCISCO – Nov. 17, 2011 – SteelSeries, the leading manufacturer of premium-quality, competitive gaming peripherals and Ignite Game Technologies, creators of groundbreaking auto racing platform Simraceway®, today introduced the Simraceway® SRW-S1 Steering Wheel, an affordable, high-performance PC controller that aims to open up a whole new racing world to players frustrated by the limitations of joypads.

A handheld hybrid racing controller that combines the features and functions of a high-end wheel with the portability and convenience of a joypad, the SRW-S1 includes a motion-sensor for steering and a patent-pending throttle and brake paddle system for a fully simulated driving experience without the need for floor pedals.

Designed, tested and approved by a team of champion drivers, including four-time IndyCar Series winner Dario Franchitti, double Indy 500 Champion, the late, great and much missed, Dan Wheldon, and SimRacing stars David Greco and Bruno Marques, the new wheel brings racing game players complete customizability and original features that will enhance their PC racing experience.

“When we set out in 2008 to create a new kind of racing game, one of the first issues we had to confront was the age-old ‘interface problem’,” said Ignite CEO Jonathan Haswell. “For decades now, racing game players have been faced with the unenviable choice of spending a huge amount of money on a wheel-and-pedal set that is tricky to set up, store and transport or settling for a binary joypad that simply isn’t fit-for-purpose.

“It soon became clear that the only solution was to produce something completely new and unique. A controller that would be affordable enough for those who can’t justify spending fortunes on top-end racing wheels but authentic enough to convey the full exhilaration of the virtual racing experience. We were honored that a company with the reputation of SteelSeries understood the direction we wanted to head in and we’re overjoyed with what they’ve managed to produce for us.”

“We’ve been working with the Ignite team and their professional drivers for the past year to really perfect the wheel’s design and functionality,” added SteelSeries CEO, Bruce Hawver. “We’re confident in the success of this peripheral; we’ve combined feedback about its design from its rubberized grips to shift lighting along with the features that are found in true racing wheels, that Indy 500, F1 and simulated racing drivers need and use. The wheel’s original functionalities, price and its compatibility with virtually every PC racing game on the market, makes it a truly unparalleled product.”

The SRW-S1 Steering Wheel features include:

Portability and Authenticity

Unique hybrid design brings a true-to-life racing experience to your laptop or desktop computer without the set-up, storage or transportation hassles of a wheel-and-pedal set.

Full Range Acceleration and Braking

A patent-pending, hand-controlled paddle system on the rear of the wheel produces full-range acceleration and braking, providing drivers with the same subtlety of control as high-end wheel sets and real-world cars.

Optimized Design

Over 20 on-wheel buttons and dials, each one optimized for easy access, and two ergonomically-designed rubberized grips ensure drivers stay in complete control.

Plug-and-Play with Simraceway

No complicated configuration required when used with Simraceway. No device drivers to load, no bamboozling set-up process to follow—simply plug-and-race.

Compatible with PC Racing Games

Can be used with most PC racing games although some features, including the Assists dials and the shift indicator LEDs, may not be compatible with certain titles.

Complete Customizability

Many of the SRW-S1 Steering Wheel’s controls can be customized to suit the driving and gaming preferences of individual players.
