Problem is, as the sim continues development, a complete snapshot of "how and where" becomes more difficult to locate. This thread should give you all the current information on a reoccurring basis. If you have additions to add that I've left out, please send me a PM with your suggestions/corrections and I'll add them to the first post (with full credit!).First InstallationIf you have not purchased and installed before, you can download the latest ISI files here (log in required): http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/forums/301/1/rFactor_2_Downloads.html The download version can be activated for purchase.Read the ISI installation PDF first. It will advise how to step through the purchasing process as well as installation. Get it here: http://rfactor.net/web/rf2/first-time-install/Your path can be the default or you can place it on another drive. You will get two prompts for paths. Be sure and put your DATA in a sub-folder of the main install folder. For example, the path on my drive:D:\rFactor2D:\rFactor2\Data\After installation, put all the component files (rfcmp) and mod files (rfmod) in your "Packages" folder. Do this before starting up rFactor2. The location of the "Packages" folder may vary based on your installation. Mine is at ...\rFactor2\Data\Packages\After you have the files needed in the Packages folder, this is what you will see. Note that I can't directly install the "SimHQ-Clios-Series" until some other files are installed first.Right click on "Renault Clio Cup", then click "Install".It will then Verify and Install the mod (rfmod).Click on "Options" then the check mark next to "Show Mods Only", and you will be able to view all the components currently installed and not installed. The four tracks we need for the "SimHQ-Clios-Series" are not installed. So we need to right click on each and select "Install".You'll note there is a 5th "Location" that is already active: "MillsMetro". That is installed as part of the ISI "Renault Clio Cup".To get the "SimHQ-Clios-Series" rfmod for online racing, connect to "Online Race" in the rFactor 2 Launcher. The "blue button" used in rFactor 1 to identify a specific server is not available in rFactor 2. Use the filtering shown below to find the server:When you find the SimHQ Motorsports Server, and don't have the "SimHQ-Clios-Series" installed, the type will be in a pale yellow. Note the "Get Mod" button. Click on it.It will then download and install the "SimHQ-Clios-Series" mod. The type turns to a brighter yellow, and the button changes to "Join".These two images above are from an earlier created custom SimHQ rfmod for Brianza, but it is the same visually.Notes about rfmods and rfcmps. You do not need to install every single rfmod available, only the rfmods referenced to make the mod run. For example, I didn't need to install the WEC GT Mod and its updates to play the SimHQ-Clios-Series. Only the mods and rfcmps shown above. But how do you know which rfmods and rfcmps are needed? When you click on "Get Mod", it will tell you what is missing. Kinda. You still have to determine which rfmod contains the specific components. This is clunky IMO, but the good news is, ISI is working on it to hopefully "declunkify" it.ReinstallationFor reinstallation, back up the .rFactor folder. If you're familiar with the function of the "TryMedia" folder in rFactor 1, the ".rFactor2" folder has the same function. You should find it here in Windows 7: C:\Users\YOUR PROFILE\AppData\Roaming\ Copy the .rFactor folder and you've backed-up your credentials so it doesn't necessitate a reactivation.Clean install. I've yet to hear of anyone not having a problem sooner-or-later doing incremental updates. Make sure all residue folders are deleted from the previous installs. Use the "Uninstall" function in the Control Panel and manually check for left behind folders.UpdatesEach mod can have multiple updates that have to be installed. In the case of the "Formula Renault 35s", there are two updates to the original mod installation. Going back to the "Packages" and "Mod Manager" again, you'll see the three yet to be installed rfmods for the "Formula Renault 35s":When you look at the Mod Manager, you'll see the original "Formula Renault 35s" v1.0 installation.Install it as you have previous mods:Notice the asterisk column, and the asterisk next to the "Formula Renault 35s" mod? This non-descript column is how you know there are further updates to a mod. If you see an asterisk next to the mod, there is an update out there that needs to be installed. To install it, right click on the mod and select "Update".This does not update both of the available updates, just the one from v1.0 to v1.1, so you need to repeat the process again to update v1.1 to v1.2...Cumbersome, but it gets you there. Will ISI make "complete" mods available in addition to incremental mod updates once rF2 is gold? Yes.Updating rFactor 2 VersionsSo you made a groan when I suggested "clean install" earlier, huh? Okay, here is how you do the incremental update. Again, good luck and if you have problems, try the clean version approach and backing-up your ".rFactor" credentials folder. Anyhow... The update is an exe file, so just click on it and it installs, right? BZZZZT, wrong! DO NOT click on the update exe.Instead, put the exe file in the "Updates" folder a couple of rows down from the now familiar "Packages" folder.Go to the rFactor Launcher, click on the "Updates" tab, and it will check your "Updates" folder where you plunked the exe.Automatic updating isn't ready yet, so do this by the manual process.Alphabet SoupFirst, an explanation by Ahmad of rfmods..."An RFMOD holds all the data and files for the Car or Track mod you've created or downloaded.A VMOD (also with the extension .rfmod!) is just a pointer to full data RFMOD's.So if you have downloaded the Toban track RFMOD (or RFCMP) and downloaded the Megane car RFMOD separately and want to run them in a series on your server, you simply make a VMOD that points to those 2 files which will create a new series for you to launch. The advantage over creating a VMOD as opposed to a full RFMOD for another series with existing components, is that the file size will be much smaller (only a few megabytes) but this does mean that the user will have to download and install the Car and Track RFMOD's separately before installing the VMOD.The VMOD is only a pointer, it can't point to anything if the original RFMOD's are not installed. In rFactor 1 terms, the VMOD plays the same role as the rFm file."I've suggested to ISI they give virtual mods (or commonly know as vmods) a separate name from the actual car and track files of a full rfmod. Using .rfmod for "real" mods and .vmod for the "virtual" mod can only help some of the confusion.Whats an .rfcmp?A component file. Some players think .rfcmp's only relate to tracks (or Locations). Not true. Looking in the "Packages" folder again by unchecking the "Show Mods Only" displays a bunch of rfcmp files. Also, you can look at the component files installed from within rFactor 2:It would be nice if ISI could change the file extension for track locations to .rftrk or some other extension but .rfcmp.TweakingIf you're used to editing your profile .PLR and multiplayer.ini file, they are still there in rFactor 2. Be sure and back them up before editing "just in case". The path is...\rFactor2\Data\UserData\YOUR PROFILE\Adding Custom SkinsThe good news: With build 101, you can add custom skins that resolve the image in windows problemThe bad news: Custom skins are still difficult (compared to rFactor 1) and have display problem. If you decide you want to add custom car skins to your events, at this current time it is not as easy as it was in rFactor 1.Below is a video I did for the "SimHQ-Clio-Series" and a text step-by-step description of how to install custom skins. If you can view the video in full screen at HD, you'll see the text and it'll make much more sense. Tim Wheatley posted this information back in December 2011, and it still applies..."You save the file in DDS DXT format (Photoshop plugin required) into data directory:\My Documents\rFactor2\User Data\player\settings\COMPONENT NAME\VEH NAMEalt.ddsFor example, a Nissan GTR skin would be:\My Documents\rFactor2\UserData\YOUR PROFILE\settings\NissanGTR\NGTR_00alt.ddsFor special templates, such as the Clio wheels and windows, you put them in the same location, adding either "EXTRA0" or "WINDOW" to the file name. For example: clio_16EXTRA0.dds.We currently do not individualize (by user) alternate skins, so you would need to create a 'car set' for each group of friends and copy them into the working directories when needed, or every alternate car skin will always used the same alternates." Let's go through the procedure step-by-step:1) Download the skin(s) of choice here at the ISI Forums:http://isiforums.net/f/showthread.php/1396-Downloads?p=20193&viewfull=1#post201932) Paint away as you did in rFactor 1, and flatten the files to dds. You need to save them as DXT5 with the alpha layering, which makes a bigger dds file that with rFactor 1 skins, but includes better reflections and lighting.Tutorials on painting:http://www.rfactorcentral.com/skins/spraybooth.cfmhttp://www.simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/35221023) Once you have your cars, you need to select which existing "car" to base your custom skins on. The file naming is critical to success. Create a folder that coincides with the base mod name. In this example, "Renault_Clio".4) The car I'm basing my custom skin set on is named: "clio_12.dds". To determine the car name, go here in the rFactor 2 "Vehicle" view:So my first car skin based on the "clio_12.dds" would be "clio_12alt01.dds" and the window file would be "clio_12alt01window.dds". Each successive car naming would follow this sequence.BTW, the new vehicles listing option is a nice addition, ISI!5) Lets digress a bit to the Windows folders view. This next part will be contrary (at least it was to me!) to what you've learned in rFactor 1. Since there are not individual folders for cars in rFactor 2, drop all your car dds files in the folder together. The path to my installed example is:D:\rFactor2\Data\UserData\YOUR PROFILE\Settings\Renault_Clio\clio_12alt01.ddsIf you use ISI's suggested default path, it would look like this:\My Documents\rFactor2\UserData\YOUR PROFILE\settings\NissanGTR\NGTR_00alt.ddsHere is what it will look like. Note I used only the skin and the window dds files for the Clios. I did not include the "extra" file. If you wanted to use it, drop it in the root of this same folder. All files must be in the root of the folder. No sub folders like "skins" used in rFactor 1 will work.6) Now lets look back inside rFactor 2 to the "Vehicles" view. Now that you have a folder and car dds files, you should see them in the listing in the lower right. It took a couple of minutes the first time I accessed it on my laptop before the images appeared. Also a reminder to click "Reload".7) OOPS! Now we see the bug. After you view the first car in your new skin set, rFactor 2 loads a bogus car built from the windows dds file. Since the car files all have to be placed in the root folder, rFactor 2 "reads" the "clio_12alt01window.dds" file the same as it does the legitimate "clio_12alt01.dds" car file. The good news is, just disregard the bogus set of cars built from the windows dds files. My video shows this problem when clicking from car to car. There may be a way to get around this problem, but I haven't determined a solution yet. If you don't have the same problem, send me a PM or email because I'd like to know how to fix it!As with the rest of the information in this write up, it is a work-in-progress that will be updated as new information is released. If you find alternate or better ways to unravel the rFactor 2 beta, let me know and I'll update this post with full credit to you! EmaPa88
