You can now download a new update of Live for Speed with graphical improvements and support for the Oculus Rift DK2. The main visual improvement is related to objects with transparency, such as trees and railings. In most cases we have been able to improve their appearance a lot by using a new drawing style.
We are also drawing the cars using a more efficient method which helps keep the frame rate high, specially when there are a lot of cars visible.
The Oculus Rift support has been well tested and received a lot of support from people who have been able to try the new DK2 headset. It is a lot of fun being able to look around the cockpit of your car or the world you are in just as you would in real life. The sense of scale is something to be experienced!

3D2_s.jpgWST004_s.jpg

Three ways to get Version 0.6G :

1) AUTO UPDATER - If you already have version 0.5V or later :

- Click on "Multiplayer" then "List of Hosts" in LFS and choose a download mirror.

2) MANUAL PATCH (17.8 MB) - If you already have version 0.5Z25 or later :

- Click HERE and save the patch installer.
- You can run the patch installer from its download location or from your LFS folder.
- Alternative for advanced users only : patch in zip format.

3) FULL VERSION (145 MB) - If you are new to LFS or making a fresh installation.

- Click HERE to visit the download page and get the full version installer.

TIPS on using Live for Speed with an Oculus Rift DK2 :

1) How to get LFS running on your Rift DK2 :
- Oculus Configuration Utility - Set your Rift to extended mode
- Windows Display - use extended desktop mode (not duplicated)
- Set the DK2 to rotated mode in Windows (sometimes confusingly called portrait)
- Check that the light on the front of the DK2 is blue (receiving signal)
- Check that the DK2 part of the desktop has the correct orientation
- Start LFS and click 3D on the View Options Screen
- Select Oculus Rift and click OK
- If all is well, LFS offers "Exit LFS to restart using the Rift"
- Click OK to exit then when you restart LFS it should be in the Rift

2) To reset your seating position, there is a text command /rift reset which is assigned by default to the F8 key.
- When a new driver takes over, ask them to look straight ahead then press F8
- Key assignments can be edited in Options - Game - F1 to F8

3) If, for any reason, LFS ends up on the Rift in 2D mode or with a black screen, you can get it back like this :
- Press ALT+F4 to exit LFS
- Delete the file "card_cfg.txt" in your LFS folder, so LFS starts up on the primary device (usually your monitor)
- After starting LFS again you can try to enter 3D mode again

4) Accessing your desktop while LFS is on the Rift.
- You will probably find that your mouse cursor is confined to the Rift's virtual monitor
- Press CTRL+C to free the mouse and now the mouse can go onto the desktop
- When you click on a window on your desktop, LFS will be minimised
- To go back into the Rift, click on Live for Speed in your taskbar

lfs_south_city_oculus_rift2.jpg

Changes from 0.6F to 0.6G :

Oculus Rift DK2 Support :

The Oculus Rift DK2 must be set to Extended Desktop mode
Start LFS, go into Options - View and click 3D at the top
For Display Type, select Oculus Rift then click OK
If all is well, LFS offers "Exit LFS to restart using the Rift"
Click OK to exit then when you restart LFS it should be in the Rift

Optional new command line options /rift=on and /rift=off
Use e.g. in a shortcut to make sure Rift mode is entered or not

LFS.exe /rift=on - try to go straight into Rift mode
LFS.exe /rift=off - do not go into Rift (ignores previous mode)

Oculus Runtime 0.4.2 (or later) is required

fern_bay_trees_and_sun.jpg

Graphics (visual improvement of transparent objects) :

Improved edges of transparent objects like trees and railings
Re-exported all transparent textures to improve image quality
Texture names ending ATEST / ALPHA / ALP24 all now end _ALP
If you do not install new textures, old ones will be converted

Graphics (other) :

Anisotropic filtering (AF) now default 4x
Mip bias sliders saved differently in cfg.txt
- You must set your mip bias and AF values again
Increased maximum value of multiplayer draw distance
Two new 3D formats : red-cyan anaglyph and cross-eyed view
Textures are automatically resaved (if needed) for faster load
Low res textures now load just as quickly as high res textures
New car shaders give higher frame rate when many cars on screen
FIX : Car lighting momentarily vertical as car entered a shadow
FIX : Graphics options sometimes showed too many FSAA options

Skin downloading when watching a replay :

If a car or helmet skin in a replay is not available at LFS World
when you start the replay (with low or high res skins selected)
but you already have the skin in the other resolution then that
skin in the other resolution will be used instead of a plain car

InSim :

New packet IS_HCP for host to add extra mass or intake restriction
to particular cars (affects all drivers using those cars)

Misc :

Driver's body is now enabled by default
Reduced input lag when vertical sync is enabled
Frame rate limit now disabled if vertical sync is active
Cars now drawn in nearest to furthest order for optimisation
CTRL+S screenshot message now stays for two seconds instead of one
Updated translations - thank you translators

TEST PATCH 0.6E4 (3D support - no change to physics)

WARNING : THIS IS A TEST
NOTE : THIS DOES NOT CONTAIN NEW TYRE PHYSICS / VW SCIROCCO / ROCKINGHAM
PLEASE TEST BEFORE YOU POST
NO OFF-TOPIC FEATURE REQUESTS
NO UNRELATED COMMENTS

Hello Racers, here is a new TEST PATCH : 0.6E4
You can read about LFS development in the main forum :
https://www.lfsforum.net/showthread....94#post1823294

This test patch is fully compatible with version 0.6E
You cannot upload hotlaps made with this test patch because it is only a test patch, not an official patch.
Please keep a backup of your LFS.exe from 0.6E so you can easily go back if there are any problems.

Changes from 0.6E to 0.6E4 :
Stereoscopic 3D support :
In the View Options screen you can select 3D mode on the second line.
Various options will then be available to you :

SBS / TAB - left and right eye images are displayed side by side or top and bottom

half / full - the image is compressed to half width or not compressed

HUD adjustment : Brings the 2D elements closer - this is good for a headset because you can bring the interface as near to you as the steering wheel.

3D adjustment : Makes 3D elements further away - this is good for a TV because the sky and distant objects will appear to be behind your screen.

Notes :
TEST PATCH : THERE ARE NO EXTERNAL VIEWS OR 3D OBJECTS IN THE MENUS WHEN IN 3D MODE

SBS half is a commonly used format and should be available on many 3D TV sets. Horizontal resolution is reduced. Most active shutter displays need to use this option or TAB half. I am interested to know which looks better.

TAB half should be the best option for passive displays which use alternate lines for left and right eye. Vertical resolution is reduced compared with 2D mode but there is no additional loss of resolution on a passive display (which must reduce vertical resolution of a full height image in 3D mode).

SBS full is the closest thing to what is required for an Oculus Rift, but the necessary distortion has not been applied. There is no Oculus Rift tracking support either. You may be able to use intermediate software to use this mode on an Oculus Rift, in which case you should probably use interface scaling to reduce the height of the HUD (Options... Display... Interface).

Other changes :
Lateral and longitudinal accelerometer values now work realistically
FIX : High frequency changes in acceleration were filtered in OutSim
FIX : Helmet stayed the same after changing driver in MP replays

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS :
A FULL version of LFS 0.6E must already be installed

Open the zip file and drag the specially named LFS exe file into your LFS folder.

NOTE : You can see if the patch is correctly installed when you run
the program. At the bottom of the entry screen : 0.6E4

DOWNLOAD :
TEST PATCH 0.6E4 (ZIP FILE) (if you already have 0.6E) :

Dopo un lungo silenzio, è finalmente disponibile una nuova versione aggiornata dell'ottimo Live for Speed: è infatti possibile scaricare la nuova test patch F, che va ad aggiornare la release 0.6 del software. Purtroppo non sono ancora disponibili le attese novità alla fisica delle gomme o la VW Scirocco e la pista di Rockingham, ma sono presenti varie migliorie tecniche, come ad esempio per la grafica in DirectX 9, il supporto ad Oculus Rift ed ai televisori in 3D.

Today we release an new update of Live for Speed with 3D support and announce another version that is coming soon with a much improved Westhill track.

3D2_s.jpgWST004_s.jpg

Version 0.6F:
Available today and well tested by forum visitors, this new update supports 3D devices including TVs, projectors, headsets and the Oculus Rift. While developing it, we also moved onto DirectX 9 which allows for better graphical effects in future while still allowing LFS to run on older versions of Windows and on Linux (using the Wine compatibility software). This version remains fully compatible with 0.6E with many improvements and fixes.
Read more about the patch and how to get it on the 0.6F information page.

Westhill Update:

Available soon... as the development for S3 has been taking some time, we thought it would be good to update something for our existing license holders. The best thing to update was the Westhill track which was always sparse and underdeveloped. The International configuration has been improved in many places, particularly in the twisty sequence of bends in the far corner which is now more challenging. There is a new National configuration, bearing off from the International track after the first right and left bends, involving some interesting gradient changes and technical bends. The scenery has been developed to a higher level of detail and you can drive around the access roads in the open configurations.
You can see more images of the new track on our screenshots page.

The configurations are complete and good to drive. At this point Eric is still finishing some buildings and filling some holes in the scenery. Scawen is making some improvements and optimisations to deal with the higher level of detail. We expect to release this version for testing in a few weeks, but remember that sometimes interesting things can come up that make things take a little longer than planned.

Further Progress:
After the Westhill update, Eric will continue with the S3 tracks he has been working on. Scawen will continue with the new tyre model. The new tyres currently feel good to drive but some work needs to be done on heat, pressure, friction, tyre load sensitivity and wear which are all closely linked.

WARNING : THIS IS A TEST
NOTE : THIS DOES NOT CONTAIN NEW TYRE PHYSICS OR ANY NEW CONTENT

Hello Racers, here is a new TEST PATCH : 0.6G3

Open configuration support has been improved as part of the new Westhill update we have been working on.
This test patch IS compatible with version 0.6G
This test patch CAN play replays from version 0.6G

You cannot upload hotlaps made with this test patch because it is only a test patch, not an official patch.
Please keep a backup of your LFS.exe from 0.6G so you can easily go back if there are any problems.

Changes from 0.6G2 to 0.6G3 :

Misc :
Regenerated lightmaps and visible object lists on most tracks
Added paths at Fern Bay to cover road near Club and mini oval

Fixes :
AI drivers hot wall entering pit lane at SO Classic / Town
Removed single-sided rectangle near the bridge at Fern Bay
Missing shadows on cars under bridges at Aston and Fern Bay
Shadows could appear on cars near path edges in open configs
Default lightmap sometimes used lighting from previous track
Removed message about 93 objects when loading Autocross track
Restored shadows mistakenly removed from South City buildings
Changing between reversed / forward configs - wrong lightmaps

Changes from 0.6G to 0.6G2 :
Open Configurations :
As part of the development for the Westhill track update that is still in development, the support for Open track configurations has been improved. When possible, LFS now uses a suitable path from one of the default configurations so these things work :
- Hidden object removal gives high frame rates
- Lighting system now works so that car looks correct in shadow
- Echo maps are used so the sound changes depending on location

The X (forward) and Y (reversed) open configuration selection buttons are now visible on the track selection screen.

Hidden object removal :
The visible objects are now detected using a much better method than in older versions. Visible object files for the existing tracks are provided in the patch. You should find there is now very little pop-up of objects, but still with a high frame rate.
The visible object lists for the TV cameras are now stored in a separate list per camera rather than being path based. So you should no longer see objects disappearing occasionally when using the replay / TV cameras.
Misc :
Collision detection improved near the ends of long objects

Translations :
Updated Italian, Lithuanian, Russian and Ukrainian translations
Updated Brazilian Portuguese version of docs\Commands.txt

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS :
A FULL version of LFS 0.6G (or later) must already be installed

To install the PATCH using the SELF EXTRACTING ARCHIVE :
1) Move or save the patch into your main LFS folder
2) Double click the patch to extract it to that folder
3) When you see "Confirm File Replace" select "Yes to All"
4) Now you can start LFS in the normal way

NOTE : You can see if the patch is correctly installed when you run
the program (LFS.exe). At the bottom of the entry screen : 0.6G3
